Trimming the Excess

Oftentimes in our early twenties, everything is done in excess. We get ridiculously drunk, buy more clothes than can fit into our measly non walk-in closets, and consume calories like they’re going out of style. So, by the time we reach 25, we’ve got a few extra pounds in places we don’t want, and more debt than we ever imagined we’d have. Here’s the good news – we’re young! We can still bounce back from mistakes with very little permanent damage. It’s just all about learning to control the excess in our lives.

For example, when my now-fiancé and I moved in together, I had to get rid of about half my closet. While my fiancé couldn’t believe I had so many clothes, I was practically crying at the thought of getting rid of my black corset halter that was a staple of my “going out days.” In retrospect, I was being ridiculous and was no longer going to wear the halter, but I felt I needed it. In the past couple of years I’ve realized there’s a big difference between thinking I need something and actually needing something. And sure, it’s more than okay to treat ourselves from time to time, but I really challenge you to ask yourselves, do I really need another pair of shoes, or do I really need that second piece of bread before dinner? Chances are you really don’t, and this can help trim some of the excess that we all struggle with. Hopefully we’ll all end up with a little more green in our wallet and a little more wiggle room in our pants.

Happy Monday!

  1. I completely agree. I totally went out of control with eating, and spending, and just overall, not being responsible. Now, I'm credit card free, working on saving up for a down payment on a house, and losing those inches around my midsection that suddenly appeared.
